Deleting text messages with the iPhone 5

Hi. I was reading through the thread of people having trouble hanging up with the power button, so it's nice to see that I'm not the onlyone having problems with the iPhone 5. It's hit or miss as well if I can answer a call using the two-finger double tap, but maybe I'll get the hang of it some day.

For now, though, I have a question about how to delete text messages. Someone tried to tell me that all you have to do is swipe over the message, but apparently this doesn't work with voiceover on, so can someone please let me know how I can do this using voiceover? Thank you.

I'll explain how to delete messages, but I want to write it out by steps, so will post that after this one if someone else doesn't.
Here is what I think happens with the double tap.
I think how you do it, or the concept of what it is exactly is why we have problems answering calls.
Try this. The phone rings, and you touch it with one finger, leaving that finger on the screen, then you touch the phone with a second finger.
Double tap.
You can place one finger on the left edge and swipe to the right as well just above the large button.

I am new to the Iphone's messaging app but here goes: 1. open messeging 2. find the person's name 3. find the edit button and then double tap the edit button 4. find the person's text double tap it and the Iphone will ask if you want to delete the text double tap confirm and the text will be deleted. I was wondering if I may, how does a person just clear out the inbox in one move?

That works.
Also for the swipe method, swipe down on the message and it should say "Delete" and double tap.
If it does not say Delete on the message when you swipe down on it, make sure you move your rotor to Actions, but most often it will. The only exception I have found is if you were set to Vertical Navigation before, which I have in my rotor for use with my Braille display.

Forereel, starfly and LeoGuardian, thank you so much for your posts. I haven't had a chance to try forereel's method to answer a call yet, but will do so at my next opportunity. Starfly, I had to keep on swiping, going back for ages, until I found the person's name, but once I did I was ale to delete the thread. LeoGuardian, I'm not sure what you mean when you said to move the rotor to actions because all I find when I use the rotor is "words", "characters" and "headings". Sorry for being such an ignoramus, but I'm still feeling after a couple of months that I made a big mistake getting an iPhone because it seems like I'm forking out $80 a month just for a freaking thermometer. :-) I was hoping eventually to get some apps to use, but I might die of old age before then. *Sigh!*

Here is how I do it.
Depending on where you are in the texting app, page, or field makes the difference in how you delete.
Landscape or portrait doesn’t matter in how I’ll be describing this.
In the first window, and by that I mean the list of text messages from, if you go to the top left hand corner you’ll find the edit button.
Next find the message you want to delete.
I find it is easier to go down on the left side through the messages list, because as you get to them you hear delete, and the number, or message name and the button.
When you hear the one you want to delete, with the same finger touch in that spot twice. You’ll be asked to confirm if this is the message you want to delete, touch twice again quickly and it goes.
You’ll have to practice the touching or tapping twice with the same finger, but if you do it gently and quickly, not moving your finger much it works good.
Now if you have the message open, you can delete the complete conversation, or just parts of it.
If you want to delete the conversation.
Find the edit button on the top right.
Then to the left top you will find clear all. If you use that one it clears the complete conversation, but not the listing on the main screen.
If you just want to delete parts find the text you want. Keep a finger on the screen and touch with another one to select it.
Now go to the bottom and find the delete button. You will see you can forward it as well. You can select several messages at once to delete or forward.
The delete button is on the left side, the forward button is on the right side.
If you cage you mind on any of this you will find the cancel button top right.
I am assuming you know how to activate buttons, so didn't say.
Hope this helps.

Well try the swipe down first, meaning put your focus on a text message in the list, then swipe down. If that doesn't say Delete, then you should have an Actions Item at that point in your rotor, it only shows up when it's available.
It's frustrating for blind and sighted alike to get used to these. I've watched the in-laws get used to theirs, and when the wife gets one she will have some challenges also, but once you get used to some of the concepts you'll do okay.

Yes, the actions method is much easier to use than marking via the edit menu. Mainly because once you're able to get the hang of swiping down with one finger and hearing delete, this will work in many places including email, voicemail, and messaging.

To the original poster:
It took me a bit of time to get used to using an iPhone, and I'm still not horribly quick with it. One piece of advice I want to give you in general though: learn the layout of your screens, the ones you use most. Don't just swipe left to right back and forth through everything all the time. For instance, on my iPhone, my home screen has messages in the very top left, phone in the very bottom left, weather somewhere in the middle but a bit toward the top right. Get an idea vaguely of where stuff is on-screen so that your swiping is minimized. Once you can do this, you'll find that you spend less time just looking for the one damn thing you want on a screen full of information. Every app has its own curve that way (that is, they're not all laid out exactly the same way, of course), but the more you use them, the more you'll get used to them. The only way to get better is practice, quite honestly.

Well, I promise it is a bit more than a thermometer. Smile.
I believe you can even place a telephone call, but I'm not sure! Lol
JK.
Yes, practice.
Have you set with the phone and read the manual as you do things with it yet?
I found the manual a great learning tool.

Disconnecting the call with power button wasn't only a hit and miss with the iPhone 5, but the 4S as well - at least with mine it was.
I've also had trouble with the two finger double tap to connect and disconnect a call so will see if the above will work for me.

When a call is coming in, swipe to the right, and it should say "call answer button". double-tap that. This issue about being unable to pick up a call has always mystified me, honestly, but I also know that enough people have it that I must be the minority. Every time my phone rings, while holding it in my hand I'll swipe to the right, and if it bumps up against the last element (or bottom of screen or whatever), I swipe left instead, and I get call answer, or sometimes call options. Either way, flick one way or the other, double-tap call answer button, and you should be good to go.

I still want to know how to clear out the text messeging in one move, is there away?

Post 14 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 05-Jun-2013 17:03:39

I can clear the complete conversation in that screen as I've said, but I've not tried to clear them all at once from the first screen, so that would be interesting.
I've not tried. I wonder if a sighted person can, I've just not thought about it.
I keep my messages cleaned up pretty well.
That question is a good one.

They could: they have this for the recents in the phone app so why not the texting? I don't get that many texts anyway except the wife, daughter and nieces. But I can see how this would be a help, and the phone app has it.
Lol I'm glad for whoever it was in Quicknotes one of the teenagers, that told me how to use the actual phone on my iPhone when I got it.

I learned of a method to delete all your messages at once, but it is not an iPhone setting.
Verizon, and I'll bet, other companies have intergreated messaging on the website.
With Verizons, if you send messages from the site, they are marked with your phone number.
There is a check box that allows you to delete them all, and they are much like text on your phone. Time, date, contact.
When sending from your phone, or computer, or tablet, the messages are stored, or removed, just like when you use a third party program to do email.
For you that desire this ability, check with your provider and see if they offer such service.

Post 20 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 14-Jun-2013 9:08:34

I spoke to soon on the Verizon service.
While it does have a remove all feature, and anything done online happens also on the phone, not the delete messages.
I am sorry about that. It was looking good, and seemed to work as advertised.
If I send a message from the phone, I can see it online. If I send a message online it also shows on the phone.
The only advantage to the service is being able to read messages written strangely with your screen reader. You also receive an email address text can be sent to from a computer.
Keeping a record off your phone is also one.
Sorry about the hasty post. It will not remove them, only online.

guys, I know this is a bit off topic, and I should know this already, but how the heck do you delete a contact on the phone? probably stupidly simple, but I'm beyond frustrated. Plus, how do you find the action router. Thanks, and sorry for the dumb inquiry. lol

Post 22 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Saturday, 15-Jun-2013 5:14:51

No not supidly stipmle. So go into the contact, then tap edit which is the top right hand button. Then I use the 4 finger single tap on the bottom of the screen, that takes you to the last thing it recognizes. Now flick right and you will be on Delete Contact. That'll do it.

Post 23 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 15-Jun-2013 15:40:40

I’d like to add one last thing.
I have learned, if you use, for example, Verizon’s, app, for sending messages, than, what happens on the phone, happens on line, and vice versa.
If you use iMessaging, or the messaging built in to the phone, messages you send to other persons will happen online, but not anything sent using iMessaging. Only some features will work between the iPhone and the provider.
So, if you are willing to use your providers messaging app, if they have one, chances are you will be able to delete and other things to your messages across devices, Verizon’s works this way.

to the guy that was wondering how to clear out your inbox i'm not sure if this is what you want but here goes.
say you are texting Person A and you just want to delete the messages you have been exchanging with Person A for that session all you have to do is swipe to the editbutton, then you want to double tap on that. Once inside you'll find a clear all button. double tap on that and it will totally erase the entire thread and it will be like you guys never had a conversation. the person stays in your text queue but the message field is just totally emptied out.
If you want to erase them and the messages you just double tap on messages, find their name, and swipe up with one finger, i like to use my pointer, and you will here delete, double tap on that and poof they're out of your inbox.
if you were talking about emails well i'm not sure but i'm guessing you can do what you do when editing textmessages, double tap which highlights them then you can hit delete? anyhow hope that helped someone.
